Bayern Leverkusen have confirmed that German midfielder, Florian Wirtz will be out for “several weeks” after being diagnosed with a ligament injury.
Florian Wirtz has been a key man at Bayer Leverkusen since making his senior debut, helping the team to a 51 games unbeaten run, winning the bundesliga last season, scoring 18 goals and providing 20 assists in all competition.
Wirtz was forced off the pitch on Saturday during the team’s home loss to Werder Bremen, just 14 minutes after coming on halftime.
The club has confirmed the tackle from Bremen’s Mitchell Weiser led to a ligament injury and the German would be out for “several weeks” to come.
The club stated: “the diagnosis from an MRI scan following the game. The 21-year-old midfielder will be out of action for several weeks”
“The loss of Florian obviously hits us hard in this phase of the season but we will compensate for him with a strong squad,” said Simon Rolfes, Bayer 04 sporting managing director. “We know Florian and also know he will come back as soon as possible. Everybody will support him in that. We are assuming he will be fully fit again for the end of the season run-in.”
Xabi Alonso’s side currently sit 8 points below league leaders Bayern Munich in their title defense season after game week 25.
Florian Wirtz’s injury is an additional blow to Bayer Leverkusen who currently trail 2-0 down to German rivals Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16. Leverkusen will host Bayern on Tuesday evening in the second leg of the tie.
