Manchester United are reportedly set to continue building their project with manager Ruben Amorim despite the Europa League final loss last night. The Red Devils lost to Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao through a Brennan Johnson strike in the 42nd minute of the game.
Critics and frustrated Manchester United fans have called for the dismissal of the Portuguese manager after ending the season without a trophy and currently sitting 16th on the Premier League table. Manchester United face Aston Villa in the final game of the season on Sunday, a must win or risk the possibility of finishing 17th on the table this season.
Club captain Bruno Fernandes defended Amorim in a post match interview, insisting that the Portuguese manager was the right man for the Job:
“I know it’s difficult to understand that, it’s difficult to see that. But I still do think that he’s the right man to lead the club. I do think that the club is in a situation where it’s easier to get a different [head coach] in because the results haven’t been there. But as my other teammates said, and I repeat myself, I do think he’s the right man.”
According to a report from Fabrizio Romano today, the Manchester United board have no intentions of sacking the 40-year-old manager, as they believe he will be a key part of the club’s planned long project. Romano’s report also stated that the club plans to support Amorim with new signings this summer ahead of next season.
Manchester United have identified Wolverhampton Wanderers’ winger Matheus Cunha as the possible first addition to the team’s squad this summer. Manchester United are expected to activate the 25-year-old’s £62.5m release clause soon, after the player said ‘yes’ to a move to Old Trafford.
Manchester United have also shown interest in recruiting Torino’s goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić and Ipswish Town’s striker Liam Delap. Current players Johnny Evans, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund have been linked with a move away from the club as well.
