The Rolling Stones Share Tribute Cover Of Clifton Chenier’s “Zydeco Sont Pas Salés”
In honor of Clifton Chenier’s centennial (born June 25, 1925), the Rolling Stones recorded a spirited rendition of his 1965 zydeco classic “Zydeco Sont Pas Salés,” collaborating with Louisiana accordionist Steve Riley. Their version opens the upcoming tribute album A Tribute to the King of Zydeco, set for release on June 27, 2025, via Valcour Records and Smithsonian Folkways .
Mick Jagger sings in impeccable Creole French, backed by Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, who inject the Stones’ trademark guitar interplay into the driving zydeco rhythm. Produced by CC Adcock, the track blends the raw swing of Chenier’s original with the Stones’ rock’n’roll swagger — “sounding like they’re just running wild through the swamps with it” .
This tribute album features a stellar lineup: Lucinda Williams, Taj Mahal, Steve Earle, Charley Crockett, Jimmie Vaughan, John Hiatt and more, all honoring Chenier’s influential catalog. CJ Chenier, Clifton’s son, also appears — reinforcing the project’s cultural continuity
Beyond music, the project aims to support future Zydeco musicians. All proceeds go toward the Clifton Chenier Memorial Scholarship at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, funding zydeco accordion students in the Traditional Music Program
The Stones have long acknowledged Chenier’s impact. Keith Richards commented, “Zydeco and Clifton Chenier have been with me since forever! It’s deep South with some interesting French,” echoing the group’s deep respect . Jagger’s decision to cover this seminal song was heartfelt — rooted in his love of Chenier’s music rather than obligation
The single is also available as a limited-edition 7″ vinyl (with Chenier’s original on the B-side) adorned with artwork by Louisiana artist Francis Pavy, released on June 30
