Netflix has officially announced the production of a groundbreaking documentary chronicling the legendary heavy metal band Judas Priest. Titled The Ballad of Judas Priest, the film promises an intimate, uncensored look at the band’s remarkable journey over five decades. Co-directed by filmmaker Sam Dunn and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, this documentary marks Morello’s directorial debut in the music documentary genre.
The documentary aims to delve deep into Judas Priest’s evolution from their formation in Birmingham in 1969 to becoming pioneers of heavy metal. It will explore their musical innovations, cultural impact, and the challenges they’ve faced, including the infamous 1980s “subliminal messages” trial and frontman Rob Halford’s groundbreaking decision to come out as gay in the late 1990s.
Featuring interviews with band members, archival footage, and commentary from fellow musicians and industry experts, the film will provide a comprehensive look at Judas Priest’s influence on the heavy metal genre. The documentary is set to be released on Netflix in early 2025, offering fans a chance to witness the band’s legacy in a new light.
