Croatian midfielder Luka modric will officially leave Real Madrid at the end of the season after spending 13 years with the club. Modric joined Real Madrid from English side Tottenham in the summer 2012 for £30 million.
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano broke the news of Modric’s departure today, confirming that the Croatian’s 13 year spell at the Santiago Bernabeu will come to an end this summer. The report from Fabrizio Romano also stated that Modric intended to remain at the club for another season.
Real Madrid refused the veteran’s demand for a contract extension as they opted to open a ‘younger era’ at the club. The Spanish giants have been linked with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, who could be a potential replacement for outgoing Modric.
During his 13 years at Real Madrid, Modric helped Los Blancos win six UEFA Champions Leagues, six FIFA Club World Cups, five Spanish Super Cups, five UEFA Super Cups, four La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey titles, making him one of the most successful players in the club’s history.
Luka Modric penned a heartwarming farewell letter to Real Madrid fans, this afternoon:
“Dear Madrid fans,
Time has come. The moment I never wanted to come, but that’s football, and in life everything has a beginning and an end… On Saturday I will play my last match at the Santiago Bernabéu.
I arrived in 2012 with the desire to wear the shirt of the best team in the world and with the ambition to do big things, but I couldn’t imagine what came next.”
“I feel proud to have been part of one of the most successful eras of the best club in history.”
“Leaving with a full heart. Filled with pride, gratitude and unforgettable memories. And even though, after the Club World Cup, I’m no longer going to wear this shirt on the field, I’ll always be a Madrid fan.” He added.
Luka Modric will be sent off with a special farewell ceremony this weekend and will play his last game as a Real Madrid player at the Santiago Bernabeu. He will officially leave the club after the FIFA Club World Cup.
