Dani Alves Cleared of Rape Conviction After Appeal

Former Barcelona defender, Dani Alves has been cleared of rape conviction following a verdict appeal on Friday.

Dani Alves was accused of raping a woman at a nightclub in Barcelona in January of 2022. Alves was handed a four and half year prison sentence in February 2024 after he was found guilty of the crime.

According to AP, four judges of a Barcelona based court unanimously ruled to overturn the Brazilian’s conviction today. The judges pointed out in their ruling that the testimony of the plaintiff differed from the video evidence before Dani Alves and the woman walked into the bathroom where Alves is accused of forcing her to have sexual intercourse with him.

The victim’s lawyer had asked the court to increase Alves’ sentence from the initial four and half year sentence to a twelve years sentence. The prosecutors asked for nine years.

Alves now 41 was with Mexican club side, Pumas when he was accused and arrested in 2023. The club immediately terminated his contract leaving the former Barcelona man without a club since then. It’s currently uncertain what’s next for Dani Alves.
